Evolveyabastard - Better Business Getting More Done in Less Time
To every question in business, the answer is EVOLVEYABASTARD.
No matter what the question, no matter what the ambition, the answer is EVOLVEYABASTARD.
Evolve? What is this?
Evolve means to do more in less time. The evolution of all things, including you means "greater in consciousness, less in number" – and this applies to all walks of life. Like the dinosaur died out because it didn't adapt. Please don't let that be you. Evolveyabastard means, adapt – get smarter, stay ahead, do more with less. Lets explore how we do that in business.
Business. You are at work, trying to grow your company, the sales are flat, return on investment is not growing, and costs are increasing. This is what we call Depreciation. De-Evolution. You may call in the consultants to help, but you will still be faced with the question, what do I do?
The answer is, EVOLVE. Take the existing business model you are running and ask, how can I do what I am currently doing more often with less resources? Typically, managers answer this question in the language of hard work, people motive and human resource efficiency, but this is wrong. The answer is in refinement. The process must change.
To achieve process improvement you'll need to know. Specifically what outcome are we trying to achieve more of. That might be sales. Then you must ask, specifically what causes sales. The answer may be presentations to clients. Then you must ask how do we do more presentations to clients, with less resources. Ahh, and your mind might say "we can't" and here, you have found the opportunity to quote Chris "Evolveyabastard" because it is here, in the can't that you have become a blockage to your own success.
Technology, process, systems, methodology are the vehicles for evolution. You might argue that the client isn't ready. But my experience is that the client is always ready, provided there is an advantage to them. How do you travel less, communicate with clients more, be more focussed on the quality of the presentation and therefore, do more of them, in less time.
At the other end of the scale in business, you must look at the other end of the evolution equation. The first step in the evolution equation is "Greater in consciousness (smarter – more refined)" now the second step "less in number…(less resources)" – how to do more in less time, less effort?
Say there is a team working for you on your presentations and on the client account. And that team is composed of certain qualifications, personalities, and capabilities. And they function under a system of certain management by your department head. Now we must evolve this.
First place to look is the leadership. Is the department head growing in their management capacity or are they just doing it tough with more and more and more of the same approach. Here we need to make tough decisions because if individuals in an organization don't continually grow themselves, learning new techniques, growing new methods, skills, then they become a block to evolution.
The second place to look is the system. Is the system designed for an office that was running on IBM computers with a speed of 615mz, and floppy drive computers? Most offices are still managed as if people cannot use the technology that is in front of them. Did you know that you can see any screen in an office any time you choose at the flick of a switch on your computer anywhere in the world? So you can interact with teams and designers as they go? Did you know that there are animation companies that work 24 hours a day because they have three shifts working on one design, evolving the animation and therefore not causing people to become attached to the mechanics of design.
Did you know that there are software programs that show daily schedule plans for teams, compute this against the budget for production, and show where people are "Padding" the work to fill their comfort zones, spending 3 days to do what is budgeted for 2 hours?
Evolveyabastard. Does not mean greed, it means better customer service, better work practices, use of technology to cause people to do more in less time. Evolveyabastard is natures intent for all life, and here, we simply apply it to business. Later, lets look at relationships.
